Studio Policies
Studio Memberships
Artist memberships are the heart of our studio space. We wish to cultivate an educated, fun environment where artists work independently and benefit from a shared community with a love of clay exploration. By purchasing a monthly membership, you will have access to our studio seven days a week, use of work tables, storage for your supplies and work, and basic tools. Memberships are limited and must be approved in advance. ClaySpace is a positive, inclusive environment!
Firing Fees
Members pay kiln fees in addition to the monthly membership. You can share kiln space and thus reduce fees, and this is worked out with friends or studio management. Kiln fees are reasonable and reflect industry standard. There is a kiln firing sign up sheet for reserving your kiln and determining fees. Members are responsible for clean up of shelves and kiln furniture and should leave kilns clean and free of any debris. If shelves are damaged during firing due to glaze melts, there is a $25 charge per shelf.
Glazes
ClaySpace stocks a basic selection of slips, washes, and stains. Because we are a working artist based studio, members should expect to build their own glaze collection based on individual needs and preferences. Glazes brought into the studio should be tested for stability prior to application on major work. All personal glazes should be labeled with your name and cone requirement. Please remember there is a charge for damaged kiln shelves or equipment.
Clay
Our studio currently provides firings with a temperature range of low fire to cone 5/6. We offer a variety of commercial clay bodies for sale, and studio members are required to purchase clay from our studio. These purchases help offset our studio operating expenses and also ensure a cleaner workspace. Members are encouraged to recycle their own clay, but there are strict policies on dry clay use.
Cleaning
Keeping a clay studio clean is an essential daily process and is vital to everyone’s health. Members are expected to clean their areas at the end of each work day, per studio membership guidelines. Studio members who do not take this policy seriously will not be offered future opportunities to work with us. Please be considerate of your studio mates and keep our studio an inviting space!
